### Installing a payment app APK on a terminal

The payment app APKs are ordinary Android packages, so you install them on a card machine the same way you would on any other Android device - connect the terminal to your computer over USB and install either from the command line or from Android Studio.

```admonition
icon: fas fa-info-circle
title: What to expect on real hardware
content: |
    The vendor builds run against the terminal's real hardware, so you can print a transaction receipt on the terminal's own printer.
    They also need a real card to tap or insert - either a physical test card from your Partnership Manager, or Visa's [CDET app](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.visa.app.cdet&hl=en) on an Android phone, tapped on the terminal to emulate a contactless card.
```

#### With adb

`adb` ships with the Android SDK platform-tools, which Android Studio installs for you. Connect the terminal over USB, then confirm it is visible:

```bash
adb devices
```

Install the APK you downloaded:

```bash
adb install -r <downloaded-apk-file>.apk
```

`-r` reinstalls over an existing copy and keeps its data. Once the install succeeds, the app appears in the terminal's launcher.

#### With Android Studio Device Explorer

Useful when you would rather not touch a command line, or when the terminal is already connected to a running Android Studio session.

1. Connect the terminal over USB and open Android Studio.
2. Open **View > Tool Windows > Device Explorer** and select the terminal from the device dropdown.
3. On the **Files** tab, right-click a writable folder such as `/sdcard/Download` and choose **Upload**, then pick the APK.
4. On the terminal, open its file manager, tap the APK in that folder and confirm the install. Allow installing unknown apps from the file manager if Android prompts for it.
